Author's Appraisal - Muriel Shepherd

Also included is a series of correspondence between LC and Muriel Shepherd regarding her husband Mick’s war experience, his inclusion in an unspecified publication by LC and his recent passing. Contains a script copy of ‘The New Zealand Y.M.C.A. with 2 N.Z.E.F. in Middle East and Italy, 1940-1945’, by B.W. Potter. Chronicles the role of the Y.M.C.A. in WWII conflict involving New Zealand soldiers. Also includes photocopied newspaper clippings of Y.M.C.A. advertisements from 1918 and 1921. The date of the script is unknown, however the subject matter of the folder as a whole is c.1918-1945.
Bawdy Songs Article (Octopus Group)
A series of correspondence between LC and Andrew R. T. Campbell of Octopus Publishing Group Ltd. regarding Campbell’s publication of ‘Bawdy New Zealand Songs’. The topic, Campbell highlights, is one that LC broaches in ‘Songs We Sang’ and he therefore asks LC to contribute some of the songs as well as a chapter of writing about them. The correspondence occurred when LC was at the Smithsonian Institute in California. The date range is November 1987 – August 1988.

The date range of the content is c. 1918-1947.

A section of the Underwood collection that contains typed script, correspondence, pictures, poems, and general handwritten notes. Documents certain mythical creatures such as ‘Bilikin’, ‘Blivils and Finkles’, the ‘Key Bird’, Snallygasters/Snallygosters and ‘Squimp’. Many of these were developed within 20th century war periods. The date range of the content is c. 1943-1947 with the subject matter referencing WWI times (1914-1918).

The primary focus of the collection is on the fabled character of ‘Kilroy’ and the origin of the ‘Kilroy was here’ tagging tradition that bred out of WWII (which appears to be disputed). A section of the Underwood collection that contains photocopied newspapers and articles, a manuscript titled ‘They Had A Word For it’ by Underwood, handwritten notes, glossaries of war time slang and correspondence.
