Bawdy Songs Article (Octopus Group)
A series of correspondence between LC and Andrew R. T. Campbell of Octopus Publishing Group Ltd. regarding Campbell’s publication of ‘Bawdy New Zealand Songs’. The topic, Campbell highlights, is one that LC broaches in ‘Songs We Sang’ and he therefore asks LC to contribute some of the songs as well as a chapter of writing about them. The correspondence occurred when LC was at the Smithsonian Institute in California. The date range is November 1987 – August 1988.

A series of correspondence between LC and Graham McEwan of New House Publishers about the use of LC’s poem ‘Silent Generations’ in a play by Diane Bardsley. LC also uses the correspondence to propose his novel ‘A Secret Life’, which McEwan dismisses on the basis that New House Publishers exclusively caters to a secondary school market. The correspondence occurred between July 2996 and March 1998.

Contains a typed letter from Bernice Beachman of Penguin Books NZ Ltd. Along with a handwritten note addressed to Beachman. The correspondence concerns a few photocopies of LC’s images that Beachman wishes to obtain for a potential book cover. The typed letter is dated July 1, 1994.

The collection is centred around exchanges between LC and Judith McCulloh of the University of Illinois Press, who appears to have had the initial interest in publishing ‘Dark Laughter’. After providing some editing and review, they eventually pull out of the project and suggest LC tries publisher with more of a folklore and/or military history base. The date range is 1986-1990.

A series of correspondence between LC and the University Press of Mississippi concerning LC’s proposed publication ‘Dark Laughter’. After review, the press decided against publishing the work but suggested that LC tried Greenwood Press (where it was eventually published). The date range is October 1991 – March 1992.

A series of correspondence between LC and Patricia Smith of the University of Pennsylvania Press. The correspondence begins with Smith’s interest in LC’s presentation for the American Folklore Society titled, ‘War Comics and Vietnam’, then goes on to discuss the potential publication of ‘Dark Laughter’ (of which as deemed unsuitable for that press). The date range is 1988-1991.
