LC also uses the correspondence to propose his novel ‘A Secret Life’, which McEwan dismisses on the basis that New House Publishers exclusively caters to a secondary school market. The correspondence occurred between July 2996 and March 1998.

Summary of contents A collection of correspondence, a Steele Roberts Catalogue of New Zealand books, an invitation to the launch of ‘Shape-Shifter’ by Hone Tuwhare and the introduction to a proposed book about Peter Cape, by Roger Steele. In the initial correspondence Steele asks if LC would be willing to edit his introduction. In a separate, undated, handwritten letter, Steele discusses ‘The Last Dance’ (LC’s unpublished work) and suggests some work be done to it. The date range of the collection is c. 1997-2001.
