Scope and Contents

This collection consists of copies of recordings made by Koro Dewes. Recorded from the 1950s to 1970s in Te Reo Māori, with some English, it contains whaikōrero, tikanga, whakapapa, waiata, hui, and oral histories. Though previously primarily associated with Ngāti Porou this collection contains recordings from across the motu.

Scope and Contents

Contains the original and a photocopy of a Victoria University Department of Anthropology welcoming and lamenting waiata in both Maori and translated into English. The translation is accompanied with comments and annotations about its use with the Maori Battalion in WWII. It appears that the document was given to LC by Bernie Kernot [?]. The original copy was published May 1968 and the translation was done September 1970.

Manuscript songbook, by Mereana Grant of Ngati Porou. Photocopy of original bequeathed by Mereana Grant to Mrs Rangi Dewes, with typed introduction by Koro Dewes (then senior lecturer in Maori language) dated 1972.

Scope and Contents These songbooks (two manuscript and one photocopied) were deposited by Koro Dewes in 1974, apparently to be copied and then bound with an introduction by Mr Dewes. A handwritten title states: "Maori Literature. Dance poetry etc from the Mss Bk of Mrs Ngoi Pēwhairangi, Te Hokowhitu-a-Tu Group of Te Whanau-a-Ruataupare (Ngati Porou) at Tokomaru Bay. Scope and Contents Volume with two parts front and back: The front contains handwritten songbook of 36 songs in Maori composed by using European English and Italian tunes to songs such as ‘Blue Skies’ and ‘Bono mote mio more (sic)’. The back contains a collection of raw songs, tunes and other materials from countries such as Japan and Fiji probably to be used in future compositions.
