The AUS was formed in 1991 from the merger of the Association of University Teachers of New Zealand and the New Zealand Universities' Technicians' Industrial Union.Records from predecessor organisations were also transferred by the AUS. The archives of each of these organisations have been described as a separate agency. These predecessor organisations were:

Scope and Contents
The records include the working files of the organisations, chiefly correspondence and subject files, together with some minutes and accounts, also awards, printed material on workers' compensation, and some newspaper clippings. The bulk of the union material comes from the 1940s, with all the files closed in 1948.

Abstract
Roberts was secretary of the N.Z. Waterside Workers' Federation from its revival in 1916 until his 1940 appointment to the wartime Waterfront Commission; he was also secretary of the Transport Workers' Advisory Board, and of the New Zealand Alliance of Labour from its 1919 establishment to its 1937 demise.
