Scope Note: Helen Lowry Hall is an independent, non-profit University Hall of Residence for Victoria University of Wellington, located at 19 Blakey Avenue Karori and governed by a Board of Trustees from the university, teaching, and financial communities. In 2009 it accommodated 122 students in a mixture of single and shared rooms.

The Hall was founded in 1948 by a group of Wellington College of Education students. The Hall purchased the land at the current site on Blakey Avenue in the 1960s and built three, two-storey buildings. In the 1970s the Ministry of Education acquired the land and buildings, three neighbouring properties were also been acquired by Victoria and the Colllege of Education. In early 2009, the Hall purchased a further neighbouring property. [Source: URL http://www.helenlowryhall.org.nz/aboutus.html viewed 31 March 2009]
