The 'message' consists of a quotation in Maori and English and then another quotation which Sir Apirana Ngata had written in Rangi Bennett's autograph book, together with a background note. The landmark Te Maori exhibition was a milestone in the Māori cultural renaissance. Featuring traditional Māori artwork, it toured the United States from 1984 to 1986 before returning to New Zealand for a nationwide tour in 1987.

These songbooks (two manuscript and one photocopied) were deposited by Koro Dewes in 1974, apparently to be copied and then bound with an introduction by Mr Dewes. A handwritten title states: "Maori Literature. Dance poetry etc from the Mss Bk of Mrs Ngoi Pēwhairangi, Te Hokowhitu-a-Tu Group of Te Whanau-a-Ruataupare (Ngati Porou) at Tokomaru Bay.
