Biographical note
Born Freda Mary Pym, 9 November 1896, Oxfordshire, England. Came to New Zealand In 1924. Married Eric Cook in 1935. Died 20 January 1990, Titahi Bay, Wellington. Active throughout her life in the communist and unemployed movements, and numerous other progressive movements in both New Zealand and England. In 1960 she took up an invitation to North Vietnam as the first full-time English teacher at the university of Hanoi. Although the increasing severity of the war after she had come to NZ for a conference in 1968 prevented her from returning she maintained her links with Vietnam.
