Biographical / Historical

These archives were collected in 1973 by Les Cleveland, from the attic of a cottage at 62a Boulcott Street. Andrew Compton, afterwards Compton & Kirkwood, was a timber merchant and sash and door manufacturer in Boulcott Street, Wellington.

The records were found in a property formerly used by the firm and were considered to have research interest for architectural history, and as specimens of printing. They consist chiefly of trade literature, and have suffered some mould damage in the past. There is also a fragile and damaged copy of 'Rudiments of Curvilinear Design', by George Phillips.

A brief typed letter from Les Cleveland relating to the discovery and background of the archives is available in the paper finding aid. See also the entry for Compton Family.
