Academic career with relevance to Victoria University:
Enrolled 1928; completed LLB 1933, LLM 1934.
English and NZ Law: Lecturer, 1940-47; Senior lecturer, 1947-51;
Criminal Law: Part-time Lecturer and War Service, 1944-46
Credited with introducing the Socratic method of teaching Law to Victoria University in the late 1940s.
English and NZ Law: Professor, 1951-75
Administration: Deputy Vice-Chancellor, 1962-75; Retired, 1975; Emeritus Professor, 1976.
Honorary LLD, 1977.
Editor of 'The Spike' 1933, in which he published an article by him which was highly critical of the teaching of Law at Victoria ('Untwisted teaching: some remarks on Legal Education'). The original issue was promptly suppressed by the Professorial Board and the journal republished minus Campbell's and two other contentious articles.
General Secretary of the NZ Police Association 1937-1940.
