The records are predominantly Minutes (District Council 1925-1978, with several gaps before 1961; F. O. L. National Executive 1937-1974) and correspondence files from c. 1937 to 1978.

They records were transferred in two accessions, one in 1987 and the other in 1993.

Biographical / Historical

The Wellington Trades Council is the customary name of the Wellington District Council of the New Zealand Federation of Labour. It was originally the Wellington Trades and Labour Council, having been established in the 1890s as a forum for the consultation and combined action of unions in the Wellington district. In May 1927 the Federation of Trades and Labour Councils amalgamated with the New Zealand Alliance of Labour and the Council 'incorporated the district Council of the Alliance of Labour'. In 1937 the Alliance of Labour was superseded by the Federation of Labour and the Council became the District Council of that body.

Series have been treated continuously although the names change from Wellington Trades and Labour Council to Wellington District Council New Zealand Federation of Labour (NZFOL), in 1937.

Arrangement

This collection has come in two accessions 1987-011 and 1993-005 Description and listing of the records was undertaken but not completed at various times. It is likely the 1993 accession was comprised of the volumes and the 1987 one the file boxes, but there is not clear evidence to prove this. In 2020 The records were assimilated as it was decided the accession distinction was not as useful for discoverability as ordering the records together in a logical arrangement.

A simple arrangement of four major series: Minutes, Correspondence, Circulars and Campaigns was imposed upon the records. They were sorted into their respective committees and were aranged chronologically. CK 23/09/2020
