Attended Victoria University 1925-1929, MSc with First Class Honours.
Awarded scholarship to Cavendish Laboratory at Cambridge University while Ernest Rutherford was Director there. Appointed to position of Demonstrator in Physics and Assistant Lecturer at King;s College, London in 1932, where he remained until 1936. During this time he completed his PhD from Cambridge. Chair of Physics at Canterbury College (NZ) from 1937-1940. In 1941 he was encouraged to go to Sydney to join the CSIR's urgent radar programme, set up alongside radar research being done in the UK and in 1944 he was invited to join the CSIR's executive committee. He became Chairman of the CSIRO in 1959, and retired from that position in 1970.
In 1954 he received a CBE and in 1962 was knighted.
