Victoria University of Wellington Students' Association (VUWSA)
Scope and Contents
The earliest records (from 1899-1905) have not survived, although the student journal 'The Spike' dates from June 1902 and aimed to provide 'an official record of the doings of The College and of all clubs and institutions in connection with it'.
Copies of VUCSA outward letters are held from 1905 on, and Minutebooks from 1924.
Records appear to have been sporadically kept, reflecting the realities of student politics and administration.
There is a comprehensive record from the late 1950s until the 1980s.
The 1990s saw the full emergence of digital records for VUWSA and in common with many other organisations there have been losses to record content due to storage and format shifts, and there have been gains to record distribution due to the ability to publish online.
VUWSA Executive Minutes from February 2002 and Annual Reports from 2003, along with other records, are published online via the web page http://www.vuwsa.org.nz/about/official-documents/.
A number of photographs were discovered and transferred in 2007; these have been digitised.

Custodial History
Most Students' Association records have been transferred directly from offices or storage in the Student Union to the Library, with the following known exceptions:
1) Some records appear to have been lost in 1958, during the demolition of the Student Union building. At some time after the demolition the following records were apparently deposited:
Letter-books 1905-23
Executive Minute-books 1924-1936
General meetings minute-books 1935-1946
Cash book 1939-1944
Cappicade Steering Committee 1957-1959
Finance Committee 1955-1966
Blues Committee 1930-1955
Union Building Appeal Committee 1948-1950
Correspondence with Cricket Club, 1922-1951
Also records for the Boxing Club, Rugby Club and Ski Club Hut committee.
2) Resources which were donated to Stephen Hamilton during the course of his research for the VUWSA Centennial history publication on the understanding that they would later be deposited in the University Library.
Appraisal
In 2004 a major transfer of Minutes and subject files was begun, on the basis that subsequent appraisal of the subject files would be undertaken. Although these files have been used for an Archives Management student exercise since, final appraisal has not yet taken place.
Accruals
Transfers were sporadic until 2004; since then transfers have been more frequent and have begun to coincide with the annual election cycle.
