Geography was established as a separate department at VUW c1947.
These were the main areas of teaching and research as documented by the Departmental history in 1993:
Europe, New Zealand (from 1953), Asia (from 1953), Latin America (from 1966), Human Geography (GEOG 202), Physical Geography (F P Wilson taught this subject in 1909, 'along with history, banking and finance' HF p.37), Environmental Studies, Cartography Studies, Geographic research and field methods (from 1988), South Pacific (from 1957 as separate course), Economic Geography, the geography of the peasantry (from 1965), the geography of development, historical geography, Introductory Geography.
First mention : F P Wilson taught Physical Geography in 1909, 'along with history, banking and finance' (HF p.37)
At the introduction of third year teaching in 1953, 'D W McKenzie and S H Franklin had to decide what courses would be offered' (HF p.19)
