The Association was founded on the recommendation of a Professorial Board committee on the status of women members of the academic staff, following an approach by Ngaire Adcock (senior lecturer in Psychology). 'Its aims were to protect and promote the interests of women staff, and to undertake research relating to university women, and support and encourage their academic work. In the 1980s it tackled the more specific issues of sexist language and sexual harrassment' (R. Barrowman, Victoria University of Wellington 1899-1999, p. 125).
