Records of the Wellington Labourers and the New Zealand Federated Labourers are combined in one collection, both having been administered by P.M. Butler from 1930. The files of the two organisations, under their successive names, are intermingled. The Wellington union began as the Wellington Builders' and General Labourers' Union and from 1936 to 1943 successively took in Nelson, Westland and Marlborough. The New Zealand Federation, dormant during the Depression, expanded in the years after 1936.
Butler was on the executive of the Federation of Labour in the 1950s and appeared for the Federation before the Price Tribunal on several occasions and before the 1957 Royal Commission of Inquiry on the D.I.C. scaffolding accident. His material from these activities is also included.
