Sir Robert Stout was Premier of New Zealand, 1884-1886, Chief Justice from 1899 to January 1926, and a prominent figure in intellectual rationalist circles from the late 1860s. He was a prominent member of the Dunedin legal profession as well as a Member of Parliament in the 1870s and 1880s, and was involved in public debate on such topics as social reform, education (he was Minister of Education in the late 1870s) and free thought in religion. He was a member of the Senate of the University of New Zealand (its governing body) from 1884 to 1923, and was Chancellor from 1903 to 1923. As one of New Zealand's most prominent intellectuals, and a willing public speaker, he spoke frequently at many varied functions.
