C.W. Richmond qualified as a barrister in England in 1847 and emigrated to New Zealand in 1853, joining his brothers J.C. and H.R. Richmond in Taranaki.
Elected to the House of Representatives in 1855, he was Minister of Native Affairs from 1858 to 1860 and in 1862 was appointed Judge of the Supreme Court.
He served in Dunedin from 1862 to 1867, in Nelson (with responsibility for Westland and Marlborough) from 1867 to 1873, and in Wellington from 1873 to his death in 1895.
