Identifier: ausn

Scope and Contents

The AUS was formed in 1991 from the merger of the Association of University Teachers of New Zealand and the New Zealand Universities' Technicians' Industrial Union.

Records from predecessor organisations were also transferred by the AUS. The archives of each of these organisations have been described as a separate agency. These predecessor organisations were: AUTNZ Association of University Teachers of New Zealand (1948-1991), ANZULS Association of New Zealand University Library Staff (1979-1989) which had merged with the AUT in 1989, and NZUTU New Zealand Universities' Technicians' Industrial Union of Workers (1976-1991).

On 1 January 2009 the AUS amalgamated with the Association of Staff in Tertiary Education (ASTE) to form The New Zealand Tertiary Education Union - Te Hautū Kahurangi o Aotearoa (TEU).

As yet, no archives are held from the TEU.

Biographical / Historical

AUS was the trade union representing academic and general staff at New Zealand universities between 1991 and 2008.

The Association was founded as the Association of University Teachers (AUTNZ) in 1923 and was originally an informal federation of branch associations, representatives of which formed a national standing committee. In 1967, AUT became an incorporated society with an office and staff based at Victoria University . On 1 July 1989, the Association of New Zealand University Library Staff (ANZULS) merged with AUTNZ. A second merger, on 1 July 1991, between AUTNZ and the New Zealand University Technicians Union (NZUTU) created the Association of University Staff of New Zealand (Inc) (AUS).

AUS also represented the interests of staff of the New Zealand Council for Educational Research, New Zealand Vice Chancellors' Committee, Health Research Council and the Academic Audit Unit.

On 1 January 2009 AUS amalgamated with the Association of Staff in Tertiary Education Te Hau Takitini o Aotearoa or ASTE (which had represented the staff of Technical Institutes, Polytechnics, Teachers' Colleges and other Tertiary Education provders) to form The New Zealand Tertiary Education Union - Te Hautū Kahurangi o Aotearoa, or TEU.
