A.S. Atkinson, born and educated in England, came to New Zealand with his brother H.A. (Sir Harry) Atkinson in 1853. After a period as editor of the 'Taranaki Herald', and member of the Provincial Council and Parliament, he resigned in 1869 and moved to Nelson where he qualified for the legal profession and practised until his death. He was a leading member of the Nelson Philosophical Society.
