Biographical/Historical note
Angus John McCurdy was a railways employee dismissed in 1902 for his involvement with the conservative pressure group the Farmers' Union.
He moved to Upper Hutt and was closely involved with local business, politics and newspapers there, becoming Town Clerk, and then the first Mayor.
From 1911 - 1933 he printed and published the newspaper 'The Hutt Valley Independent and Upper Hutt Advertiser' (irregular from 1926).
He established the Peoples Pictures movie theatre 1912-1935, and ran associated activities in the Record Hall which he built.
