At accession in 1983 the collection consisted of 18 archive boxes, the majority of which held 245 A5 ringbinders, each of which contained a number of index cards, carrying line by line facsimiles of the various surviving manuscripts. Each index card carried two lines (one on each side) of the poem 'Tristan und Isolt', a modern printed version at the top and facsimiles of surviving manuscript editions below. Some work had been done by a team of people to compare the m/s versions with the printed version.

After consultation with a Tristan scholar it was decided to retain three sample folders to illustrate the methodology used, along with other notes and any published works not already held by the Library. The published works will be listed and retained within the archival collection. Factors which contributed to the decision: 1. Lack of clarity regarding which edition was providing the baseline 2. Likelihood that anybody undertaking such a project now would almost certainly be undetaking it within a digital framework.
