Biographical/Historical note

The New Zealand Institute of International Affairs was formed in 1939 by the amalgamation of the New Zealand branch of the Institute of Pacific Relations (founded in December 1926) and the New Zealand branch of the Royal Institute of International Affairs (founded in July 1934).

It was established to promote an understanding of international questions and problems, particularly so far as these may relate to New Zealand, the British Commonwealth and the countries of the Pacific area.

Membership has been dominated by historians and political scientists on the one hand and senior public servants on the other.
