Scope and Contents

There have been two transfers of Prof. Hamer's papers, following his untimely death. The first transfer comprised working files from his office in the History Department, and electronic copies of his email correspondence. The second transfer added index cards to do with his electoral history research, and photograph albums chiefly covering his interest in buildings in North America.

Biographical / Historical

Hamer, David Allan, b. 1938, d. 16 May 1999

MA (NZ: Auckland), PhD (Cambridge)

Professor of History at VUW, 1970-1999. Held University positions as Assistant Vice-Chancellor, acting Deputy Vice-Chancellor and academic staff representative on Council. Hamer was an important scholar on the history of liberal politics (NZ and UK) 1880s to 1920s, and on the history of urban development. He was also the original convenor of the Wellington working party for the 'Dictionary of New Zealand Biography' (1980s), and was a member of the Historic Places Trust until his sudden death in 1999.
