Dan Long Union Library Poster Collection
Scope and Contents
The posters were used in training courses around New Zealand by the Trade Union Education Authority (for further information about the TUEA see http://www.archway.archives.govt.nz). Most of the posters had been laminated. They were donated together with the Dan Long Union Library holdings.
Of the ca.400 posters in the collection, 357 are listed in this finding aid. There are duplicate copies of certain posters within and/or across different folders. In these cases, only one copy per folder is listed in the finding aid.
The posters were produced during the 1960s-1990s period by New Zealand and overseas groups, including trade unions, government departments, international labour bodies, and political, activist and cultural organisations. The collection include large sets of posters published by the New Zealand Public Service Association, New Zealand Council of Trade Unions, Accident Compensation Corporation, and Department of Labour. Over fifty posters were designed and printed by the Wellington Media Collective. Among the overseas sources with substantial numbers of posters are the Public Service Association of South Australia, Asian Center for the Progress of Peoples (Hong Kong), and the International Confederation of Free Trade Unions.
Digital images of most of the posters are displayed in the online finding aid. To view the larger sized images, click on the thumbnails within the individual poster records. Access to and use of these images is subject to various conditions (please see the poster records for details). The digital images are displayed with the kind permission of the copyright owners. While the Victoria University of Wellington Library has endeavoured to locate and contact all such parties, our efforts have not always been successful. Please contact the J C Beaglehole Room if you have any further information concerning copyright ownership.

Historical note
The Dan Long Union Library was named for Dan Long, the General Secretary of the New Zealand Public Service Association (PSA) from 1960 to 1976. It was originally housed in the PSA Library, and had its own logo and the slogan 'your library for union information for all union members'. The Library was donated to the Victoria University of Wellington Library by the PSA in 1999 and is valued there as a rich research resource supplementing other primary and secondary collections in the field (such as union archives transferred via the Labour Archives Trust and employment history publications).
In 2009 a project began to integrate the publications into the Victoria University of Wellington Library catalogue system. The Library is very grateful to the Dan Long Trust for the financial assistance which made this project possible. The Trust also funded a project undertaken in 2013 to add digital poster images to the online finding aid.
Three elements from the Dan Long Union Library have been distinguished as Special Collections. They are 1) the Equal Pay Campaign Archive, 2) the Dan Long Union Library Poster Collection, and 3) some in-house Dan Long Union Library records. The Dan Long Union Library Poster Collection is the subject of this finding aid.
The Dan Long Union Library Poster Collection consists of ca.400 posters which were produced by various union and other groups (including overseas sources) during the 1960s to 1990s period. The posters were collected by Therese O'Connell and used by the Trade Union Education Authority (TUEA); most posters were transferred while still in TUEA subject folders. The posters are listed here in these folder groupings.
Many of the posters carried the note: 'This poster is on long term loan to TUEA from Therese O'Connell. The poster has been laminated with a grant made available by the Ministry of Women's Affairs.' Therese O'Connell has subsequently confirmed the donation of these posters to the University Library, and has donated a further collection of posters, listed separately as the Therese O’Connell Poster Collection.
