Biographical / Historical
There are three series in this collection, in chronological order:
Series 1 Commonwealth Secretariat (1980-1993)
Due to his interest in human rights and the developing world, Pope was nominated by the Department of Foreign Affairs for a three-year position with the Commonwealth Secretariat in London (‘Rover’s Return’). He went on to hold senior positions in the organisation for 17 years; as legal counsel to the Commonwealth Secretary-General (1980-1993), and Director of the Legal and Constitutional Affairs Division in London.
The post involved extensive travel throughout the Commonwealth, and much of the work involved ‘nation building’ and campaigning against apartheid (RR). Much of the material in the collection covers Pope’s involvement with the Commonwealth Observer Groups assisting the election commissions of Zimbabwe (1980), Uganda (1980), Namibia (1990), Bangladesh (1991) and Ghana (1992). Also the sports boycott of South Africa.
