Scope and Contents
Typescript made in 1951 from the original of a journal written by Arthur John Empson. England to Canton, China, kept during Empson's 20th year, and Australia and New Zealand 1840. Also contains an errata note and letters from Mrs Judith Williams regarding the transcription, and letters from family to Dr. R. Stout tipped in. Pagination indicates two volumes have been bound together.

Date information
The date as typed indicates these journals began in 1837. However, a handwritten note to Dr Stout from "Andrew S." states that Empson's travels in the Bay of Islands were in 1840, which places the beginning of the volume in 1839.

The typescript was sent to Dr Robert Stout in 1951 by Empson's grand-daughter, Judith Williams, who transcribed the originals, describing the handwriting as "rather difficult".
